In a potential breakthrough for the Israel-Hamas conflict, U.S. officials indicated on Friday that a cease-fire deal might soon be reached. Negotiators are currently finalizing logistics for the possible release of hostages and the distribution of aid as part of the agreement. This follows a series of talks aimed at bridging gaps between Israel and Hamas.

According to an anonymous U.S. official, a new “implementation cell” is being set up in Cairo to oversee logistics, including hostages’ release and humanitarian aid distribution. This cell will also ensure that the terms of any potential deal are adhered to. The official revealed that the current proposal addresses key issues and is close to a final agreement.

Mediators expressed optimism after concluding two days of talks in Qatar. They plan to reconvene in Cairo next week to finalize the cease-fire agreement. While Israel has issued a supportive statement, Hamas has expressed reservations about the latest proposal. The group argues that the new terms diverge significantly from previous agreements.

U.S. President Joe Biden remains hopeful, stating, “We are closer than we’ve ever been” to reaching a deal. However, he acknowledged that negotiations are ongoing and still face challenges. The proposed deal includes clarifications from earlier agreements and is designed to enhance Israel’s security.

Hamas has rejected some of Israel’s demands, including a lasting military presence along Gaza‘s border and additional security measures. The Israeli prime minister’s office appreciates the mediators’ efforts but acknowledges ongoing challenges.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is scheduled to visit Israel to continue diplomatic efforts and discuss the new deal with Israeli leaders. The Palestinian death toll in Gaza has surpassed 40,000, raising concerns about potential retaliation from Iran and Hezbollah. International diplomacy continues, with British and French foreign ministers visiting Israel to discuss the situation.

Despite ongoing offensives by Israel in Gaza, which include evacuations and airstrikes, efforts to reach a cease-fire continue. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has committed to intensifying joint efforts with the U.S. to reach an agreement. Hezbollah has also issued a warning with a video showing its missile capabilities, signaling its readiness to escalate if necessary.

The situation remains fluid, with international efforts focused on securing a cease-fire and addressing humanitarian needs.
